Silas Lillard plantation deed, 1840 Apr. 28.

This is an 1854 copy of an 1840 deed by which Silas Lillard and his wife, Amelia Johnson Lillard, sell their plantation in Concordia Parish, La., to Rice C. Ballard of Richmond, Va., with 69 named slaves, livestock, buildings, and household goods for $150,000. The deed includes details of payment and an explanation of Amelia Lillard's property rights.

Rice Carter Ballard (c. 1800-1860) was a slave trader based in Richmond, Va., who worked in partnership with the large slave trading firm of Isaac Franklin and John Armfield in the late 1820s and early 1830s. By the early 1840s, Ballard had settled down as a planter with several plantations in the Mississippi Valley. He married Louise Berthe around 1840 and made his home in Louisville, Ky.
